Lighting

The lighting used in film noir is low key lighting which creates harsh shadows and also in the first picture there is a use of back lighting which creates the effect of a silhouette which builds up mystery in the audiences mind. Also, this could cause enigma codes in the audiences mind because it makes them think about what could happen next. Also, there are the gun in the female characters hand suggest that there will be some kind of action set-pieces or dramatic scene that will occur. This makes it clear to the audience that there is a build up of tension and danger. There is also a use of top lighting, this makes the actors look more glamorous especially the female characters. In the second picture the smoke can be seen clearly which makes her look like she is in charge of whatever the situation is being shown. It lacks complete realism in a way because of the fact that it doesn't seem to look like there is any natural light coming in from anywhere which is usually created by using a filler lights.
