Film Review

Boyz N The Hood

This was the first time i had watched the film and i found it quite enjoyable overall. The messages that were displayed in the film were interesting in the sense that some of the topics are still relevant today which shows us the audience that society hasn't really progressed much from the time the film was created.

In terms of the film itself, i felt that it lacked the action that you would expect in a film that concerns gangs There was a lot more dialogue and scenes where, in my opinion, not much was happening. however, during those scenes there were a lot of foreshadowing to future incidents. the film is produced and written in a way to get the audience to think about the deeper meaning of what is being shown/said in each scene. personally, i thought that this was a clever way to raise enigma codes within the audience.

The mise-en-scene in this film was well done. The costume of the characters were not over exaggerated as you would see nowadays. It almost seemed as if it was so effortless as everything, such a the setting and the lighting looked very natural. The high-key lighting that is used to get rid of harsh shadows for the majority of the film adds to the effect of making everything look more realistic. This helps the audience in identifying with the characters. The lighting was high-key even when it was a negative scene, however this was compensated by the other factors of the film such as the editing, where the pace of the scene was slowed down and the cinematography showed a lot of medium close ups and medium long shots where we could still see the action but also some detail of the scene.

Camerawork - rewrite

The camerawork in the first scene shows a medium close up of the man when he lights a trail of fire. Then when it suddenly gets put out by the man dressed in all black it is a low angle shot which suggest that we as the audience are seeing it from his point of view. This in turn sutures the audience in the narrative. The low angle angle shot makes the antagonist seem superior and more intimidating which helps us when we are identifying with the character as he probably feels the same. The man dressed in all black(antagonist) is made to seem disrespectful and careless of what he does which is indicated as he pisses on the ground. However, the high angle shots of the man on the ground(protagonist) sitting is made to seem helpless since he is at the bottom and when the audience gets a medium close up on his facial expression they get to have a better idea of what he is feeling.

There was a medium close up of the gun as it was being pulled out and pointed at the man. This may have been done t make the audience feel uneasy since it has negative connotations. Also, this brings a rise of action codes as we know someone is going to get shot, which is what tells the audience that this may be the crime factor of the film. The fact that throughout the entire extract the antagonists face was not shown and that there were close ups on other factors of him adds to the fact that the genre is mystery as we don't know the identity of the killer which could lead to it being the basis of the narrative of the film.
